The exterior door is an entryway, normally made of sturdy materials made to withstand the weather outside. They may also include a window or peep hole so that the residents inside could see outside.
Exterior doors can be found on any exterior wall, in other words, anywhere an entry way could be placed to allow residents inside or outside of a building. They are normally found in the front of the house and in second or third exit.
These doors are used for safe entry or exiting of a building. They separate the outside from the inside of building and keep drafts from outside from coming in.

The interior door is an entry way as well, made of less weather-stable materials and materials better fit for the inside. They could be completely wood or even made with windows, such as french doors. Two can be placed in an entryway as well, or they can fold or slide. Some entryways don't even have doors.
Interior doors can be found practically anywhere in a building. If a room is closed off by walls, an interior door is sure to be there.
The purpose of the interior door is simple: privacy! The interior door is used to close off rooms and give residents privacy. Just remember why these doors are made. So when mother dearest says, "Close the door!" she knows the true purpose of why it was put there in the first place.
